Why is I-CAN! E-File not available for me to file my 2012 tax return this tax season?

I-CAN! E-File was created and is run by Legal Aid Society of Orange County (LASOC). LASOC did not receive the funding necessary to be able to sustain and/or provide its I-CAN! E-File self-preparation tax module to taxpayers this tax season. In an effort to provide our loyal users with an alternative tax preparation resource, I-CAN! E-File has partnered with TaxACT to enable our users to prepare and e-file their 2012 Federal tax returns completely free. How long will past tax filings through I-CAN! E-File be available and how can I access them?

At this time, 2008-2011 completed tax returns are available for you to access at http://icanefile.org/prior_0.asp?caller=0 . However, as I-CAN! proceeds with our TaxACT partnership, those copies will no longer be accessible through our software. We anticipate that transition happening by the end of February. While your prior year returns may not always be accessible through I-CAN!, the IRS also keeps copies on file for a period of time. The IRS can be contacted at 800-829-1040 should need further information, or you can visit your local IRS branch.

Can I import data from my 2011 I-CAN! E-File return to my 2012 return with TaxACT?

No account information or data has been transferred from our I-CAN! E-File service to TaxACT. Should you decide to take advantage of our TaxACT partnership for the 2012 tax season, please be sure to use the link provided at http://icanefile.org/. When you click our partnership link you will be transferred to our TaxACT page and will need to create a new account with a new username and password. Because TaxACT is not a part of our organization, but instead a partnership, we are unable to offer the ability for your personal data to carryover from your prior 2011 return to this current 2012 tax return.

Can I come to your office or a participating location to get assistance with my return?

TaxACT is an online self-preparation software module. They do not offer locations for help with your tax preparation. If you have questions during the completion of your 2012 tax return using our new partnership with TaxACT, please contact TaxACT's support and service at http://www.taxact.com/tsupport/index.asp?sc=1209542050002. As an alternative, you could contact Legal Aid Society of Orange County's legal help Hotline at 800-834-5001 to determine if you qualify for services from our tax department paralegals and attorneys. This is not a guarantee, but may be an option you would like to explore if you need more assistance in the tax preparation process. VITA (volunteer income tax assistance) is another option, if you qualify. More information about VITA can be found online and by contacting United Way Orange County at (888) 434-8248
